I just received an e-mail from Urban Outfitters about 20% off shoes, so I was browsing when something I saw rang a bell. This oxford shoe is made of a printed fabric that I’ve used in one of my designs! In the first image, you can see a swatch of the fabric that, yes, I found and own myself. It was from G-Street in the “African Cotton” section and I incorporated it into the dress illustrated above. And the second image is of an Urban Outfitters shoe in the same fabric! Can I predict trends or what. So awesome :DDD

I woke up this morning and went to my basement in a determination to create something…and found some old magenta polyester fabric I sewed into ribbons for a cultural Vietnamese dance performance a year and a half ago. Then I remembered that once on that Bravo TV-flop, The Fashion Show, the contestants used nothing but a piece of fabric and pins to drape a fake-garment. So I tried out my draping skills (which as you can see here, are either completely undeveloped or not even existent) and spent like, an hour, doing this, though I don’t really know why…it was interesting. And yes, it’s just a rectangle of fabric. No cutting or sewing. Hopefully I get better at this, haha.

*Edited! I fixed it up a bit…I personally think it looks better now. The green + pink + polka dots was a little too tacky. I also hid some of the pins and played around with the skirt. And I figured out how to light-meter with a digital camera, so that the cheap polyester isn’t so horribly shiny in the sunlight :)

So, yesterday I attended the Cappies Gala at the Kennedy Center, which is an award ceremony, basically like the Tony’s for high school theatre. SLHS’s Les Miserables won 5 Cappies out of our 9 nominations! Anddd we were instructed to dress formally, as in gowns and suits.

And I decided I’d make my own dress! :) So this is kind of my first publicly-wearable garment. I’ve made Home Ec class boxers and one pair of shorts, but this is legit. It’s a black costume satin strapless bodice and bubble skirt, layered with a sheer baby blue organza asymmetrical neckline and gathered skirt, and silver sequined midriff. I got a numerous amount of compliments; I’d say about thirty, at the very least. Four of them were from complete strangers, and nearly all of them were from people who had no idea I’d made it myself. Some people even asked where I got it, as in, they believed it was store-bought! I’m super proud. It definitely went to completely reinforce my wanting to be a fashion designer. Because the people commenting on my dress were fully under the impression that it was of a quality you’d go into a store and find on the rack. That sense of accomplishment and excellence felt just amazing. I not only constructed, but also designed it myself, by mixing and matching pattern pieces and altering them. And to have my clothes on not only me, but thousands or millions of people in the world…wow. Several girls told me “You have to make my dress next year!” and Mrs. Harris now definitely wants me to help out and make some costumes for next year’s musical & for when we to the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

Anyway, I would like to make one of the above photos my Facebook profile picture, haha…but as you know, I’m super indecisive. So I’d really REALLY appreciate some feedback. Please. Which picture do you like the best?

I entered this Project Runway competition thing online- I had to design a red dress (it was the show’s challenge two episodes ago)…if I win I get like $2,000 :3 So you should vote for me! Even though it is my opinion that some other designs are better than mine…you should vote for me simply because you’re my friend? :D It’s not that great, since didn’t spend too much time on it- I was just having fun~ But it’d be really cool if I did win :)
